Writing Letters to God: A Spiritual Practice That Changed My Life

I never thought writing letters to God would change my life—until it did. It started during one of my darkest seasons, when I felt lost, uncertain, and desperate for a breakthrough. I had prayed, cried, and pleaded with God before, but writing to Him? That felt different.

One day, a fellow inmate saw my sadness and suggested, “Why don’t you write a letter to God?” At first, I hesitated. What would I even say? But on March 31, 2020, I decided to try. I poured out my heart—my fears, my regrets, my hopes. I asked God to give me a sign that He was still working in my life. When I was done, I placed the letter inside my Bible and let it go.

Just ten days later, on my 51st birthday, I received unexpected news—because of the pandemic, I was being released early. By April 30, 2020, I was walking into my own home, free again.

That experience changed me. It showed me that God listens—not just to our spoken prayers, but to the words we write in faith. Since then, writing letters to God has become a powerful part of my spiritual journey.

Why Writing to God is Transformative:

  • It deepens your faith by putting your prayers into words.
  • It releases burdens in a way spoken prayers sometimes can’t.
  • It allows you to look back and see how God has moved in your life.

If you’re struggling, try writing a letter to God. Pour out your heart, seal it in faith, and trust that He hears you. You might just find the breakthrough you’ve been waiting for.
