Writing Letters to God: A Spiritual Practice That Changed My Life

I never thought writing letters to God would change my life—until it did. It started in one of the most difficult seasons of my journey, during my time in federal prison. I felt lost, uncertain, and desperate for a breakthrough. A fellow inmate noticed my sadness one day and suggested, *\”Why don’t you write a letter to God? \

At first, I hesitated. I had prayed, cried, and begged God for too many times. But writing a letter? It was something else. Still, I decided to give it a shot. March 31, 2020, I bled my soul onto paper. I wrote my fears, regrets, hopes, and thanked God for His presence even in the lowest moments of my life. And most of all, I asked Him for a sign that He was still working in my life.  I placed the letter inside my Bible, not expecting anything immediate. But just **ten days later**, on my 51st birthday, I received unexpected news—due to the pandemic, I was released early. By April 30, 2020, I was walking into my own home, free once again.

This made me. And it proved this: **God listens—not to our verbalized prayers, but to the writing of words. ** From there on, my spiritual life will never be without writing letters unto God. That is the core of the second part of Why Writing to God is Transformative:

It deepens your faith making your prayers touchable.

– It releases burdens and emotions in a way that spoken prayers sometimes can’t.

– It allows you to look back and see how God has moved in your life.

If you’re struggling, **try writing a letter to God. ** You may just find the breakthrough you’ve been waiting for.
